WhatsApp Coexistence
Keep your WhatsApp Business app. Add an AI that books.
Same number, same app, same chats. NextReply joins your WhatsApp Business app and books around the clock.
What WhatsApp Coexistence means for your business
WhatsApp Coexistence is Meta's set-up that lets one phone number run on the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business Platform at the same time. In plain terms: you keep the app on your phone, keep your number, keep your chats, and add NextReply on top so an AI receptionist can reply and book around the clock.
Before Coexistence, connecting a number to the platform usually meant removing it from the app. Owners had to choose between the app they knew and the automation they wanted. Many simply did nothing, and kept answering every message by hand. Coexistence removes that choice. You can use the WhatsApp Business app and API at the same time, on the same number, and step into any chat whenever you like.
- WhatsApp Business app: Keep chatting from your phone
- Same number: Nothing to delete
- NextReply AI: Answers through the platform

Will I lose my chats, contacts or number?
No. This is the question we hear most, so here are the facts. Your number stays exactly the same; customers message it as before. During connection, Meta offers to share your existing contacts and recent chat history with the platform, which helps the assistant see context. Your app keeps working on your phone, and messages sent from either side appear in the app, so you can scroll through what the assistant said.
What changes is that the number is now also connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform through NextReply. That connection is what lets the AI read new messages, reply and book into your Google Calendar.

How to keep the WhatsApp Business app with the API
Connecting takes a few minutes and you do it yourself from the NextReply dashboard.
- Open the connection screen. In NextReply, choose to connect an existing WhatsApp Business app number.
- Log in with Meta. Meta's own sign-up window opens. You pick or create the business portfolio that will own the connection.
- Confirm on your phone. Meta asks you to confirm from the WhatsApp Business app on the phone that holds the number, usually by scanning a code or approving a prompt.
- Choose what to share. Decide whether to share contacts and recent chat history.
- Set up your assistant. Add services, hours, team and FAQs, then test with a message from another phone.
The full product walk-through is on how it works. Meta's own technical description of the process is linked below for anyone who wants the detail.
What changes in the app on a coexisting number
Coexistence is not identical to using the app alone. Meta switches off or limits a few app features on a number connected this way. Depending on your app version these have included disappearing messages, view-once media, live location and broadcast lists, and some linked companion devices. Meta also expects you to keep using the app; if the app is left unopened for a long period, typically around two weeks, the connection can be interrupted. Meta updates this list, so check the onboarding page linked below before you connect.
For most appointment businesses these changes do not matter. Booking chats, photos, voice notes and normal replies all work. If your marketing relies heavily on app broadcast lists, plan to move those to opt-in campaigns with Meta templates, which are coming soon on NextReply.
Coexistence, app only or platform only: which fits you?
There are three ways to run a business number on WhatsApp today. Each suits a different stage of business.
| App only | Platform only | Coexistence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who replies | You and your phone | Software and agents in a web tool | You in the app, plus the AI through the platform |
| Replies at 2am | Only if you are awake | Yes | Yes |
| Keep the app on your phone | Yes | No | Yes |
| Automated booking into a calendar | No | Yes, with the right tool | Yes, with NextReply |
| Best for | Very low message volume | Large teams with a call-center style inbox | Small and mid-sized appointment businesses |
App only works while message volume is low and someone is always near the phone. Once evenings and weekends start costing you bookings, it stops being enough. Platform only suits larger teams who are happy to give up the app entirely and work from a shared inbox. Coexistence sits in the middle: the AI covers the hours you cannot, and the app stays in your pocket for the conversations you want to handle personally.
If you are not sure, start with Coexistence. It is the lowest-risk option, because nothing about your current set-up is taken away.
You can always move to a different set-up later. Many owners begin with the assistant covering nights and weekends only, watch how it handles real customers for a month, and then let it answer during the day as well once they are comfortable with its replies.
Who replies when: you, your team or the AI?
With two ways to answer one number, you need clear rules. NextReply follows the ones you set:
- The AI replies first to new messages, at any hour, unless a handoff rule applies.
- You can jump in at any time by replying from the app. Your handoff settings decide when the assistant steps back from a chat.
- Handoff rules send complaints, special requests or anything outside the knowledge base to a person, and the AI stops replying in that thread.
A common pattern for small teams: during opening hours the owner reads along and takes over the odd chat; after hours the assistant handles everything, and the owner checks the new bookings in the morning. See the full feature list for handoff options.
- Unusual request: Complaint, refund or special case
- AI receptionist: Knows when to step back
- Answers from your FAQs: Services, hours and prices / Hands the chat over: Your team is notified
- Your team replies: Same chat, full history
Coexistence and WhatsApp message fees
Messages you send yourself from the WhatsApp Business app remain free, as they always were. Messages sent through the platform follow Meta's pricing, which since July 2025 charges per delivered template message. Replies to a customer within 24 hours of their last message are free service messages, so the assistant answering an incoming booking request does not normally create a Meta charge. Template messages outside that window, such as campaigns or day-before reminders once they launch on NextReply, are charged by Meta at country rates. Our pricing page has more detail.
Why Coexistence is the easiest way to start
Switching tools usually costs a business something: a new number to print, customers who message the old one, staff who need training. Coexistence avoids each of those costs.
- Your regulars keep messaging the number saved in their phones.
- Your team keeps the app they know, so day one looks the same as yesterday.
- You can start with the AI handling only evenings and weekends, then widen its hours once you trust it.
- If you ever stop using NextReply, your number and app carry on as before.
For salons, dental clinics and other businesses whose regular customers have saved one number for years, this is the deciding factor. Browse all industries to see how each one uses the assistant.
Coexistence is WhatsApp only
Coexistence is a WhatsApp feature, and WhatsApp is the channel NextReply works on today, on every plan. Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger and Telegram are coming soon. When they launch, they will connect through each platform's own login and will not affect your WhatsApp app or your Coexistence setup. The channels page shows the status of each one.
- WhatsApp: Live / Instagram: Coming soon / Messenger: Coming soon / Telegram: Coming soon
- NextReply AI agent: Live on WhatsApp
- Google Calendar: No double bookings / CRM by webhook: Business plan / Your team: Takes over when needed
Tips for a smooth first week
Tell your team before you connect, so nobody is surprised by replies they did not send. Keep the WhatsApp Business app updated to the latest version, since Meta requires a recent one. Write your top ten FAQs before you switch the assistant on. Then read through the first few days of chats in the dashboard and adjust answers that sound off. Most owners settle into a rhythm within a week. If late-night bookings worry you, our guide to reducing no-shows explains what helps today; NextReply's own appointment reminders are coming soon. Questions people ask
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and Coexistence means trying it costs you nothing in disruption: your number and WhatsApp Business app stay exactly as they are.
Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and API at the same time?
Yes. That is exactly what Coexistence allows. Your number works on the app and on the WhatsApp Business Platform together, and NextReply connects through the platform side.
Do I need a new phone number?
No. You connect the number you already use in the WhatsApp Business app. Customers keep messaging the same number.
Will my old chats move into NextReply?
During connection Meta offers to share contacts and recent chat history. Your chats also stay in the app on your phone either way.
What stops working in the app?
Meta limits a few app features on coexisting numbers, which have included disappearing messages, view-once media and broadcast lists. The list changes, so check Meta's onboarding page before connecting.
Can I reply myself while the AI is on?
Yes. Reply from the app whenever you like. Your handoff settings decide when the assistant steps back from a chat so you and the AI do not talk over each other.
Is Coexistence available in my country?
Meta has widened availability over 2025 and 2026, and it now covers most countries. Meta's onboarding documentation lists current eligibility, and the NextReply connection screen will tell you if your number cannot connect.
Does Coexistence cover Instagram or Messenger?
No. It is WhatsApp only. Instagram, Messenger and Telegram are coming soon to NextReply, and when they launch they will connect separately without affecting your WhatsApp app.
