Meta Business AI or NextReply: which should handle your bookings?

Meta's free AI is a good start for catalog questions. Here is where a booking assistant takes over: calendar sync, voice notes, CRM and handoff.

Meta Business AI vs NextReply: the free option every business compares first

If you use the WhatsApp Business app, Meta has probably invited you to switch on its own AI. Meta Business AI, which Meta now also calls its Business Agent, lives inside the app, learns from your business profile and catalog, and replies to customers for you. It rolled out market by market, starting with Mexico in late 2025, and Meta announced global availability in June 2026. It is free to start, and it needs no other software.

So the honest question is not "is Meta's AI good?" It is "is it enough for a business that runs on appointments?" This page compares Meta Business AI vs NextReply on the jobs that decide that: where bookings land, what happens with voice notes and photos, the time before the appointment, CRM and the hand-off to your team. Features on both sides change quickly, so we have dated everything to October 2026 and marked what we could not confirm.

What WhatsApp Business AI does well

  • It is built in. No new account, no API connection, no monthly fee to get started in the app.
  • It answers from what Meta already knows about you: your business profile, catalog items, and the information you add in its settings.
  • It suits product questions. "Do you have this in blue?" or "What are your opening hours?" are the kinds of questions it was designed around.
  • Meta keeps extending it. Meta has said the agent can recommend products and help customers book appointments, and it is bringing the agent to Instagram and Messenger as well.

For a shop with a catalog and a handful of common questions, that may be all you need. Try it. It costs nothing to test.

Meta AI in the WhatsApp Business app vs a booking assistant: 6 questions to ask

Where the two start to differ is the booking itself and everything around it. These are the questions we would ask of any assistant, including ours.

1. Where does the booking actually land?

NextReply checks your Google Calendar for free time, offers only open slots, and writes the confirmed appointment into the calendar of the right staff member, with no double-booking. Meta describes booking help in its announcements; at the time of writing we could not confirm from public documentation how its bookings sync with an external calendar. Test it with your own diary before you rely on it.

2. Can it handle voice notes and photos?

Many customers, especially in the Gulf, South Asia and Latin America, send voice notes rather than typing. NextReply understands voice notes and photos on every plan. We could not confirm the same for Meta's agent from public material.

3. What happens before the appointment?

Today NextReply confirms every booking in the chat with the service, date and time, and the appointment sits in your calendar. Opt-in appointment reminders are coming soon: they are built and waiting on Meta's template approval. Until then, the after-hours side of the job, answering and booking while you are closed, is where NextReply does the most.

4. Does the booking reach your other tools?

On NextReply's Business plan, every booking can go to your CRM by webhook, or through Zapier, Make, HubSpot or Google Sheets. Meta's agent is designed to work inside Meta's apps.

5. How do you control what it says and when?

In NextReply you set working hours, a custom personality, your services with durations and prices, your team and a knowledge base. You decide what it handles outside hours and what it passes to staff.

6. How does a human take over?

NextReply hands a chat to your team in one tap and tells the customer a person will follow up. Check how the hand-off works in Meta's agent for your account, and who gets notified.

You do not have to choose between the app and NextReply

A common worry is that connecting a booking assistant means giving up the WhatsApp Business app. It does not. With WhatsApp Coexistence, your number stays in the app on your phone, your chat history stays, and NextReply connects to the same number through Meta's platform. You keep replying from the app whenever you want, and the AI handles the rest.

One practical tip: do not let two AI assistants answer the same chats. If you move bookings to NextReply, switch off automatic AI replies in the app so customers get one consistent voice. Details are on our Coexistence page.

Which one should you use?

Stay with Meta Business AI if most questions are about products in your catalog, you do not take timed appointments, and you are happy for bookings to be finished by a person.

Add NextReply if your revenue is appointments, your diary lives in Google Calendar, customers send voice notes or photos, you need a team notified the moment a booking lands, or you need bookings in a CRM. Our industry pages show how this looks for salons, clinics, gyms, garages and more.

Many businesses will try Meta's free agent first. That is sensible. The test is simple: send it the five messages you got last Friday night, including a voice note and a reschedule, and see which ones end in a booking you can find in your calendar.

Both follow WhatsApp's 2026 AI rules

WhatsApp's Business Solution Terms do not allow general-purpose AI chatbots for businesses on its platform. Meta's agent and NextReply are both business assistants: they answer about one business, help its customers and hand off to staff. NextReply is trained only on what you give it and is built for booking and customer service with human handoff. Read the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms for the full text.

What NextReply costs compared with "free"

Meta's agent costs nothing to switch on in the app. NextReply starts at $29 a month for up to 500 bookings, with Pro at $59 and Business at $99, and every plan begins with a 7-day free trial. Prices are in US dollars. At checkout, your card or bank may show an estimate in your local currency. Local taxes may apply. On any WhatsApp Business Platform tool, Meta also charges for certain template messages at Meta's rates.

The way to judge the price is per booking. If an AI receptionist books even a handful of appointments a month that would otherwise have been missed overnight, the subscription is usually covered, and the free trial lets you count that on your own number. Compare plans on the pricing page, see the full booking conversation on the appointment booking page, or browse the comparison hub for other tools. You can also start from how it works or the features overview.

Questions people ask

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Every NextReply plan has a 7-day free trial, so you can run it beside what you see from Meta's agent and compare real bookings before paying anything.

Is Meta Business AI free?

Switching it on inside the WhatsApp Business app is free. Meta has also announced paid business tiers in some markets that include agent capacity, so check what applies in your country.

Can Meta Business AI book appointments?

Meta has said its business agent can help customers book appointments. At the time of writing we could not confirm from public documentation how those bookings sync with an external calendar such as Google Calendar, so test it with your own diary.

Can I use Meta's AI and NextReply on the same number?

You can keep the WhatsApp Business app on your number with Coexistence while NextReply runs. We recommend letting only one AI answer customers, so switch off automatic AI replies in the app if NextReply handles bookings.

Does NextReply understand voice notes?

Yes. NextReply understands voice notes and photos on every plan, and replies in the customer's own language.

Is NextReply worth paying for if Meta's AI is free?

It depends on how much of your revenue comes from appointments. If you need bookings in Google Calendar, CRM sync and owner alerts, NextReply covers those today, with appointment reminders coming soon. If you mostly answer catalog questions, Meta's agent may be enough.

Which one is better for a clinic or salon with several staff calendars?

NextReply books into the calendar of the right staff member and only offers times that are free for the service's length, which matters when stylists or doctors keep separate diaries. If you run one shared diary and few timed appointments, Meta's agent may cover your needs; test both with a real week of messages.

Does Meta's AI work on Instagram and Messenger?

Meta has said it is bringing its business agent to Instagram and Messenger. NextReply works on WhatsApp today; Instagram, Messenger and Telegram are coming soon.
