The 24-hour messaging window on Instagram and Messenger, explained

Meta lets businesses reply freely for 24 hours after a customer's last message on Instagram and Messenger. What that means for AI replies, reminders, human agents and follow-ups, checked October 2026.

What the 24-hour window is

On Instagram and Facebook Messenger, Meta does not let businesses message customers whenever they like. The Instagram 24-hour messaging window, and the identical Messenger 24-hour rule, work like this: when a customer sends your business a message, a 24-hour window opens. Inside it, you can reply with any relevant message, whether typed by a person or sent by an automated system such as an AI assistant. Every new message from the customer resets the clock for another 24 hours. When the window closes, your options shrink sharply.

This rule shapes everything an AI chatbot can do on Instagram and Messenger. It decides whether you can send a reminder, follow up on a quote or nudge someone who went quiet. This post explains the rule, the exceptions and a practical playbook for service businesses. It is based on Meta's developer documentation for the Messenger Platform and the Instagram messaging API, which we link at the end. Meta updates these policies, so check the current documentation before you build anything that depends on them.

Inside the window: what you and your AI can send

Within 24 hours of the customer's last message, a business can:

  • Answer questions, automatically or by hand.
  • Offer appointment slots and confirm bookings.
  • Send follow-up questions to complete a booking.
  • Share links, images and relevant offers connected to the conversation.

This is where an AI agent earns its keep. The customer has just asked something, they are paying attention and the window is wide open. NextReply's Instagram AI agent and Messenger chatbot, both coming soon, are being designed to finish the job inside this window: answer, offer slots, book and confirm in a few messages. The same pattern already runs on WhatsApp today.

From first message to confirmed booking
  1. Customer message: “Any slot tomorrow afternoon?”
  2. AI receptionist: Reads service, date and time
  3. Checks your calendar: Offers only free slots
  4. Confirms in the chat: Name, service and time
  5. Booked: In Google Calendar, owner alerted

Outside the window: the human-agent tag and other limits

After 24 hours without a customer message, the standard window closes. What remains:

  • The human-agent tag. Meta allows a human agent to reply for up to seven days after the customer's last message, using a specific tag designed for cases where a person needs more time, such as resolving a complaint. It is for real human replies, not automated ones. Apps must be approved for it, and using it to send automated or promotional messages breaks Meta's policy.
  • Other message tags. Meta has narrowed the list of tags businesses can use outside the window over time. Do not build appointment reminders on them without checking Meta's current documentation.
  • Private replies to comments. On Instagram and Facebook, a business can send one private message in response to a public comment, within a limited time after the comment. It starts a conversation; it is not a way to message people at will.
  • No promotional follow-ups. Offers, "we miss you" messages and reactivation campaigns to people outside the window are not allowed as regular messages.

Breaking these rules can get a Page or Instagram account's messaging restricted. For a service business that relies on DMs, that risk is not worth a reminder.

What this means for AI replies

Three practical consequences for any Meta messaging AI:

  1. Speed matters more than polish. A reply in 30 seconds keeps the customer engaged while the window is fresh. A perfect reply after 26 hours may be impossible to send at all.
  2. Book in the first exchange. Offer real slots immediately. A conversation that ends with "let me check and get back to you" may never get its follow-up.
  3. Hand off early. If a chat needs a person, notify staff straight away so they reply inside 24 hours, or within the human-agent period if it applies.

On WhatsApp today, NextReply's handoff sends an instant notification to your team, so a complaint raised at 10pm can be answered by a person the next morning. When the Instagram and Messenger agents launch, the same handoff will keep those replies well within the rules.

When the AI hands a chat to your team
  1. Unusual request: Complaint, refund or special case
  2. AI receptionist: Knows when to step back
  3. Answers from your FAQs: Services, hours and prices / Hands the chat over: Your team is notified
  4. Your team replies: Same chat, full history

Reminders: why they belong on WhatsApp

An appointment reminder usually goes out a day before the appointment, which is often several days after the last customer message. On Instagram and Messenger, that is outside the window, so a reminder sent there would break the rules. WhatsApp handles this case differently. Businesses can send pre-approved template messages, including utility messages such as appointment reminders, to customers who opted in, at any time. Meta charges per delivered template.

That is one reason NextReply starts with WhatsApp. WhatsApp is live on every plan; Instagram, Messenger and Telegram are coming soon. Today, the practical route is to let customers discover you on Instagram and move the booking chat to WhatsApp, where the assistant books and confirms. NextReply's own automatic reminders are built and coming soon once Meta approves the templates. You get the reach of Instagram and the reliability of WhatsApp. Read how the channels fit together on the channels page.

WhatsApp has its own 2026 rule worth knowing: since 15 January 2026, Meta's WhatsApp Business Solution Terms bar general-purpose AI chatbots, while allowing business assistants for services, bookings and customer support. We cover that in detail in Meta's 2026 WhatsApp AI rules.

Four everyday scenarios, and what the rules allow

A customer asks on Friday for a slot next Wednesday

Book it on Friday, inside the window, and confirm all the details then. On Tuesday you cannot send an automated reminder on Instagram or Messenger, so ask for WhatsApp opt-in during Friday's conversation.

A customer asks for a quote and goes quiet

Your reply inside the window should contain everything they need: the price, two slots and how to book. If they come back next week, their new message opens a new window and the AI can pick up from there.

A customer complains and a manager needs time

Hand the chat over immediately. The manager replies inside 24 hours if possible. If they need longer to investigate, a human reply within the human-agent period is the right tool, but only for a real person replying.

Someone comments "price?" on a post

A private reply to the comment can start a conversation. Once the person replies in DMs, the normal 24-hour window applies and the AI can answer and book.

A practical playbook for service businesses

  1. Answer every DM within minutes, at any hour. An AI front desk makes this realistic. See after-hours replies.
  2. Offer two real slots in the first reply, pulled from your calendar. See appointment booking.
  3. Confirm with full details: weekday, date, time, service, staff member, price.
  4. Ask for WhatsApp opt-in for reminders before the conversation ends.
  5. Hand off complaints immediately so a person can reply inside the window.
  6. Never automate messages after 24 hours on Instagram or Messenger. If someone goes quiet, let them come back.
  7. Re-check Meta's documentation every few months. The rules change.

Putting it into practice

Questions people ask

What is the 24-hour rule on Instagram and Messenger?

Businesses can reply freely, by hand or automatically, within 24 hours of the customer's last message. Each new customer message resets the window. After it closes, only limited exceptions apply.

Can an AI chatbot reply after 24 hours?

Not with automated messages. After 24 hours, a human agent can reply for up to seven days using Meta's human-agent tag, which is meant for real people, not automation.

Can I send appointment reminders on Instagram?

Not reliably, because reminders usually fall outside the 24-hour window. Use opt-in WhatsApp utility templates for reminders.

What happens if I break the 24-hour rule?

Meta can restrict messaging for your Page or Instagram account, or for the app you use. For businesses that rely on DMs, that is a serious risk.

Is the WhatsApp 24-hour window the same?

Similar but not identical. WhatsApp also has a 24-hour customer service window for free-form replies, but businesses can message customers later using approved template messages that the customer opted in to.

Can I use the human-agent tag to send reminders?

No. The human-agent tag is for real people replying to a customer's issue, not for automated or scheduled messages. Using it for reminders or promotions breaks Meta's policy and puts your messaging access at risk.

How current is this information?

It reflects Meta's documentation as checked in October 2026. Meta updates its policies, so confirm the current rules in its developer documentation before you rely on them.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Every plan has a 7-day free trial. It covers WhatsApp, which is live today, so you can test instant replies and bookings on your own number while Instagram and Messenger are still coming soon.
