Malaysia has more closing days than almost anywhere
Few countries have a calendar like Malaysia's. On top of federal holidays such as Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day, you have two days each for Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Haji, Deepavali, Wesak, Christmas, Awal Muharram, Maulidur Rasul, the Agong's birthday and state holidays that differ between Selangor, Penang, Johor and the rest. Add the balik kampung week around Raya and staff taking leave around CNY, and a typical salon or clinic loses several working weeks a year.
Customers do not stop messaging on those days. Many plan their appointments precisely because they are off work. A good WhatsApp auto reply for public holidays in Malaysia does more than say "we're closed". It answers questions, books the first slots after you reopen and keeps your calendar full for the busy days before and after each festival.
This post walks through the holiday patterns that matter, closing messages you can copy and how an AI receptionist handles the rest. For salon-specific setup, see NextReply for salons in Malaysia.
The booking pattern around each festival
Before Hari Raya Aidilfitri
Salons and spas fill up in the last two weeks of Ramadan: hair colour, inai (henna), facials and grooming for the whole family. Many customers want evening slots after buka puasa. Clinics see a rush for check-ups and prescription refills before the balik kampung drive.
Before Chinese New Year
Hair appointments spike in the week before CNY, partly because many customers avoid cutting hair in the first days of the new year. Expect requests for "before the 29th" and last-minute colour touch-ups.
Before Deepavali
Threading, henna, hair and saree draping appointments cluster in the final days. Families often book several people at once.
During the closure
Messages continue: price questions, "are you open on the second day?", and bookings for the first week back. If nobody answers, many of those customers book elsewhere when they return to town.
The dates move every year, since Raya, Haji, Deepavali and CNY follow lunar or lunisolar calendars. Coming up: Deepavali in early November 2026, then Chinese New Year in early February 2027, close to the start of Ramadan, with Hari Raya Aidilfitri following in March 2027. Always check the official gazetted dates and your state's list before setting closures.
Hari Raya and festive closing messages you can copy
A Hari Raya closing message should do three things: greet, give the exact closure dates and tell the customer what they can still do. Examples:
"Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, maaf zahir dan batin! Our salon is closed from [first day] to [last day] and reopens on [date] at 10am. You can still book here now: just tell me the service and preferred date, and I'll confirm your slot."
"新年快乐!We are closed for Chinese New Year from [dates] and reopen on [date]. First-week slots are filling fast. Reply with the service you want and I'll book you in."
"Happy Deepavali! The clinic is closed on [date]. For emergencies please go to the nearest hospital emergency department. For appointments from [date], reply here and I'll book you."
Notice that none of these ask the customer to "message again after the holiday". Every closing message should keep the booking open.
How an AI receptionist handles the holiday
A static away message can only say you are closed. An AI receptionist can act. With NextReply, holiday handling works like this:
- Block the dates in Google Calendar. The AI sees them as unavailable and never offers a slot on a closed day.
- Add a holiday note to the knowledge base. Closure dates, reopening time, any shorter hours on eve days, and who to call for emergencies.
- Let the AI book ahead. A customer who messages on the first day of Raya gets a greeting, the reopening date and real slots for the following week.
- Handle staff leave. If a senior stylist is away for two weeks around CNY, block her calendar. The AI offers other stylists or her first day back.
- Hand off what needs a person. Complaints, group bookings over a certain size or clinical questions go to staff with an instant notification, to be picked up when you return or by whoever is on call.
Because NextReply understands WhatsApp voice notes, photos and English, Bahasa Melayu or Chinese messages, it can answer the full range of holiday enquiries in the customer's own language. See all capabilities on the features page and how slots work on appointment booking.
- Customer message: “Any slot tomorrow afternoon?”
- AI receptionist: Reads service, date and time
- Checks your calendar: Offers only free slots
- Confirms in the chat: Name, service and time
- Booked: In Google Calendar, owner alerted
Making the most of the pre-festival rush
The days before a festival are your most profitable of the season, and the busiest on WhatsApp. A few habits help:
- Open extra slots early. Add late-evening slots in the last two weeks of Ramadan and the week before CNY. The AI can only book what exists in your calendar.
- Publish festive packages. "Raya family package: 3 haircuts plus inai" or "CNY wash, cut and blow-dry". Put them in your service list with prices so the AI quotes them correctly.
- Send opt-in reminders. A short message two to three weeks before ("Raya slots are open, reply to book") to customers who opted in fills the calendar early. Reminders and festive messages go out as WhatsApp templates, and Meta charges per delivered template, with marketing messages costing more than utility ones.
- Confirm clearly at booking, and again the day before. Customers juggling family plans forget times. NextReply confirms every booking in the chat straight away; its automatic appointment reminders are coming soon, so for now send day-before messages to big festive bookings by hand from the WhatsApp Business app.
A holiday checklist, two weeks out
Run through this list about two weeks before each major festival. It takes under an hour and prevents most holiday headaches:
- Confirm the gazetted dates for your state and decide exactly which days you close, including any half-day on the eve.
- Block closed days and staff leave in Google Calendar, per stylist, doctor or therapist.
- Add extra pre-festival slots, especially evenings after buka puasa or late slots in the week before CNY.
- Update the knowledge base with closure dates, reopening time, festive packages and prices.
- Write your festive greeting in English, BM and Chinese, or let the AI reply in each customer's language from one note.
- Decide who receives handoff notifications during the break, and what the AI should tell customers about response times.
- Send one opt-in reminder to past customers that festive slots are open.
- After the holiday, check how many bookings arrived while you were closed. That number is the clearest measure of what the setup is worth.
Holidays are just the longest after-hours shift
Everything above also applies to ordinary nights and Sundays. Most customer messages to Malaysian service businesses arrive outside counter hours, and holidays simply stretch that gap to days. Our page on after-hours replies explains how to roll an AI out for nights first and widen it once you trust it.
Holiday messages do not only arrive on WhatsApp. Malaysians DM salons on Instagram, message clinic Facebook pages and use Telegram heavily. Instagram DMs, Messenger and Telegram are coming soon to NextReply, and will apply the same closed dates and book into the same calendar. Today the AI front desk works on WhatsApp, so add your WhatsApp link to your Instagram bio and Facebook page before the holidays. See the channels page.
Cost and getting ready before the next festival
NextReply plans are priced in US dollars, the same in every country: Starter $29, Pro $59 and Business $99 a month, with a 7-day free trial on every plan. At checkout, your card or bank may show an estimate in ringgit, and local taxes may apply. Plans cover up to 500, 1,500 or unlimited bookings. Full details on the pricing page. Setup takes an afternoon: connect your existing number with WhatsApp Coexistence, add services and festive packages, connect Google Calendar and block your closure dates. The how it works page has the steps.
The best time to set this up is about a month before the next festival, so you can test on ordinary evenings first. For more examples by business type, see industries, the NextReply home page or our blog.
